How to Write a Good Case Study Essay?

A case study is an essay that seeks an answer to a puzzle or problem. It requires a lot of research and analysis on a subject, individual or group to write a case study. For most of other forms of essay writing, you are told to research as much as you need for composing the essay. However, a case study serves as a means for conveying the research instead of the other way around.

  • Identify the Subject. It’s probably a good idea not to decide on a case problem at the beginning, otherwise you risk ending up with a biased essay only using the research to answer the problem. There are times that you can develop the case problem at initial stage, but it’s a smart move in general to remain objective before reaching your topic.
  • Choose Your Case Study Type. You can write a critical instance case study, illustrative case study, cumulative case study or exploratory case study. Find out the differences with these case studies and choose a type that suits you the most.
  • Research. Your case study type dictates the type and amount of research you need to carry out. Access to your college library or take advantage of the internet to find suitable resources for your case study writing.
  • Analyze Your Research. To proceed with the case study writing, it is beneficial if you can work in a group. Distribute the research within the group. Now might be a good time to identify a case problem as well, as it is easier to develop it through group discussion.
  • Outline Your Case Study Essay. A lot of people may want to skip this step, but that won’t be a smart move. When working on the outline, use a logical order to place your main ideas. Write down in concise language about what you intend to write in each section of the case study essay so you will have a clear guide when actually composing it.
  • Write the First Draft. When you are done outlining, it should be rather easy for you to compose a first draft. You might still need to make changes along the way rather than following your outline completely.
  • Editing Your Draft. Correct spelling and grammatical errors that you can identify. Check if the paragraphs are in the right order. Consider switching things around to present your information in a better way.
  • Write a Final Draft. Keep on editing until you are confident enough that you can come up with a final draft. After done, do a final check on the format and presentation of the case study.
